The Rag Quilt Beginning

I never thought I would be blessed with a daughter. I was convinced that all of my children would be boys. I was surrounded with all things baby boy, including my beloved son. But when I received the news that I was, indeed, pregnant with a daughter, I was elated. BRING ON THE GIRLIE FUN!

I dove into design. It was time for everything pink, everything ruffly, everything full of the happy girl energy of my dreams. Oh, and it was all for her…right?

One day, scrolling on Etsy, I came across a beautiful, rag quilt. It was designed by Melanie Traylor, whom I still adore and follow.

The colors were bold but happy, and the “rag” nature of the quilt made it look soft and even a bit ruffly.

Although I was on a tight budget, and this was surely an investment piece, I couldn’t say no. It would become the centerpiece of my daughter’s room.

Over the next two years, I gathered scrap fabrics to make a throw pillow and a bunting. I even ordered a matching bed skirt. I was in love.

For the next ten years, until the day she moved to a platform, pre-teen bed, this set adorned her room. The colors and the patterns made me smile. They were cheerful and represented all of the happiness and goodness I wanted for my sweet girl. And maybe it was the love with which it was hand-crafted, or the wishes behind the gift, but I will forever remember my only daughter’s childhood from the backdrop of this first rag quilt.
